PAIN: An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pain is a subjective state of being that can only truly be defined by the person experiencing it. Pain is both a natural reaction and a learned response. Acute pain reflects a direct tissue response to disease or injury that should subside when the problem resolves. Chronic pain is characterized as that which persists longer than the expected course of healing associated with a particular type of injury or disease process. Because pain is such an individual experience, many people may feel a sense of self-definition reflected in their pain. Pain can be so overwhelming, an individual may find it difficult to define oneself apart from its presence.
Rational approaches to pain management include accurate identification of its cause(s), appropriate treatment, and a multidisciplinary approach to managing the physical, emotional and functional components of its impact on one's life. Finding a healthy outlet for better understanding, managing and communicating one's pain experience can become part of a larger creative process geared toward self-actualization.
Physical movement can be an ideal way to nurture self-awareness, express emotion, and maintain optimal function, even for those who experience chronic pain. Creative movement, such as that found in Yoga, NIA and Tai Chi, allows participants to challenge their own potential and limitations while increasing body awareness. Massage and bodywork allow individuals to experience passive movement which is both relaxing and therapeutic. Acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, Ayurveda and naturopathy are professional services that specialize in finding and treating the causes of pain.
